Hello and Welcome!

If you are reading this, you likely share my passion for improving healthcare through better communication. Whether you are a fellow practitioner, educator, or someone invested in healthcare excellence, I am thrilled you are here. Now, let me introduce myself so we can get to know each other better.

Who am I?

I’m Fathima, and for the past 30-plus years, I have been immersed in the healthcare field as a medical imaging technologist. I trained at and worked in a busy trauma specialist hospital in Durban, South Africa. I moved to Singapore a few years after working as a qualified MIT. South Africa is a melting pot of different cultures and languages, and so is Singapore. The 6 years working in hospitals there gave me a unique insight into how important communication was. It helps bridge not just the language and cultural gap, but the human connection gap between healthcare practitioner and patient.

I now live and work in New Zealand, and manage a team of amazing mammographers. Anyone who has had a mammogram done or has had to take mammogram images will immediately grasp the significant role good communication plays in getting the best images and make an unpleasant experience one that your patient will return to in 2 years. It is a graceful dance between technical expertise and human connection in 10-15 minutes.

I have noticed something profound while working within clinical and managerial roles in healthcare. Communication gaps could undermine the most advanced clinical skills, while strong communication skills could elevate good care to exceptional care. I started asking questions of colleagues, trainees, and other healthcare practitioners in medical and allied field. I discovered there was a gap in the education we received.

I had learned my communication skills observing my clinical supervisors. I adopted their scripts for different situations, and developed my own scripts over the years.

How wonderful it would be if our healthcare practitioners and trainees were equipped with a strong communication toolkit? This has become my passion.

My Qualifications:

I have a deep love for learning and teaching. I have made it a priority to continue learning and developing in my profession. My passion for education launched me into a 6 year journey juggling full-time clinical practice with part-time online postgraduate study. This has culminated in a Master of Clinical Education (University of Auckland) in early 2025.

2026 will be a busy year as both a teacher and a learner. I am learning the art of dress pattern designing and have volunteered to teach English to refugees. I will also teach you some communication skills you can add to your toolkit. I believe learning never stops. It is such a privilege to teach someone a new skill that benefits their clinical practice.

Why this mission? Why now?

I believe my clinical experience and academic qualifications should be put to use. Healthcare is at a crossroads globally. We face unprecedented challenges: burnout, information overload, demanding patients, systemic pressures, and increasingly diverse patient populations. Yet, communication training often remains an afterthought- fragmented, theoretical, and often altogether absent.

I’ve seen the cost:

Medical errors are rooted in misunderstood instructions

Patient anxiety exacerbated by unclear instructions.

Team friction draining morale and efficiency

Healthcare practitioners feeling unequipped for tough conversations.

I have also witnessed the incredible outcomes when communication shines:

Patients who are truly engaged in their care

Teams that collaborate seamlessly under pressure

Complex information made clear and actionable

Trust that transforms clinical encounters.
